Artist Statement:

Women are surrounded by images of the “latest thing” and encouraged through fashion magazine advertising to covet and constantly consume. Fashion has the ability to empower women but also makes them vulnerable to its demands. These ambivalences and contradictions are why I both love and hate fashion.

My work focuses on the tension between female desire, consumer culture and fashion’s role in transforming female identity. This series of paintings explore the contradictory emotions relating to female consumption habits - desire, anxiety, addiction, self-obsession, longing, seduction and pleasure - emphasising the imperfect, messy realities of contemporary women’s lives.
